Our Swimming Lesson Plans and Schemes of Work for KS3 and KS4 includes :

  • The students are to be able to swim between 25  -100m using three strokes (Front Crawl; Back Crawl and Breaststroke).
  • The students must have a knowledge and understanding of how these strokes are performed accurately and fluently.
  • They must know and understand the different mechanics used in the kick and pull to aid and assist glide and propulsion.
  • The pupils will also develop the performances of gliding, buoyancy, sculling and treading water.
  • The students are to be constantly asked and tested on their knowledge and understanding of how to outwit opponents in races, starts and turns; evaluate performances; analyse strengths and weaknesses in the strokes; whilst developing, adapting and refining skills, strategies and tactics to produce high levels of performances and high-quality techniques.
  • The pupils should improve their performances and knowledge and understanding of the Front Crawl, Back Crawl and Breaststroke techniques.
  • They should clearly understand the mechanics of the arm pull and leg kick within these strokes to increase speed, power and propulsion.
  • They also will develop their knowledge, understanding and performances of the starts, gliding method and achieve a streamlined technique.
  • They will begin to perform the Butterfly Stroke using drills to develop the pull and kick.  The pupils should be able to observe and appreciate the work of others and offer informed and positive feedback to performing groups. Students should also understand the importance of raising their heart rate at the start of the session and be able to demonstrate stretches appropriately. The students are to be constantly asked and tested on their knowledge and understanding of how to outwit opponents in races, starts and turns; evaluate performances; analyse strengths and weaknesses in the strokes; whilst developing, adapting and refining skills, strategies and tactics to produce high levels of performances and high-quality techniques.
  • To perform the three strokes competently and now start to incorporate their breathing and timing with their pulling.
  • They should have a developing understanding of the Butterfly technique and develop their performances of their arm pulls and leg kicks.
  • Within these four strokes, the pupils should have developed the knowledge, understanding, and performances of starts, turns, glides, timing, power and propulsion.
  • They should clearly understand the rules and regulations used within events and competitions alongside the strokes and Medley Events.
  • They also will improve their driving techniques.
  • The pupils should work alongside external agencies to achieve awards in either GCSE PE, Sports Leader Award (JSLA) programmes, which lead to Community Sports Leader Award (CSLA).
  • They will perform extensive Water safety, Survival and Lifeguarding procedures.
  • They will become efficient in dealing with numerous safety and rescue methods and procedures.
  • The students will also practice and become able in a range of events such as Water Polo and Synchronised Swimming.
  • They will learn the foundation skills and enable them to use the skills in other areas.
  • The students are to be constantly asked and tested to further enhance their knowledge and understanding of how to outwit opponents in races, starts and turns; evaluate performances; analyse strengths and weaknesses in the strokes; whilst developing, adapting and refining skills, strategies and tactics to produce high levels of performances and high-quality techniques.
  • Alongside this the students will also have developed their own training diary over the period which they will use to teach/coach others in their chosen and specialised areas, using training, activities and skills that they have performed to develop theirs, and other student’s skills.
  • They will also plan short skill and fitness routines and have to plan/organise / and officiate a festival.
